Frequently Asked Questions

(In order to be eligible for an internship with GLA, potential candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school. Preference is given to those students who have a strong interest in intellectual property and entertainment law.)

Who Works for GLA?

GLA has a full-time Executive Director who is also a licensed attorney. In addition, GLA has one part-time paid position, the Director of Volunteer Services. A law student with previous experience interning at GLA holds this position. GLA employs student interns each semester and during the summer on a volunteer basis.

Why Should I Intern with GLA?

Interning with GLA provides law students with an opportunity to learn about the exciting world of art and entertainment law. GLA interns receive valuable experience working with clients and attorneys analyzing and resolving various legal issues facing artists and arts organizations. GLA interns are exposed to numerous substantive areas of the law including intellectual property (copyright, trademark and patent), First Amendment, immigration, labor and employment, nonprofit organizations, and other areas within the field of entertainment law.

What would I have the opportunity to do as a GLA Intern?

GLA interns perform several functions, including interviewing clients, assigning cases, observing and assisting attorneys at walk-in clinics, assisting clients in the use of our resource library, and planning and attending seminars. Interns also have the opportunity to conduct substantive legal research within fields related to art and entertainment law.

What is the Time Commitment for Interns?

The GLA office is open from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. GLA requires that interns work at least 10 hours each week during the academic year. Summer interns are required to work at least 20 hours each week for a minimum of six weeks. GLA interns are required to work at least two hours at a time. During the academic year, most interns work either one or two days a week.

What Does GLA Look for in an Intern?

GLA looks for self-motivated, energetic, reliable law students to staff our office. No previous legal or artistic experience is required, but those with previous experience in the arts are encouraged to apply. Due to the nature of the internship, GLA will only consider applicants who are currently enrolled in an accredited law school.

May I Receive Academic Credit for My Internship?

University of Georgia Law School students interning through UGA's externship program may receive academic credit for their work at GLA. Other students interested in receiving academic credit should contact their law schools for information on how to receive credit for internships. GLA will work with interns to aid in this process whenever possible. GLA is happy to assist interns with funding through grants from their schools or other grants the intern may find to support work in the public interest. Interns should contact their career services office to learn more about funding sources that support public interest internships.
